Prejudice and Misconception about alcoholism

T

Prejudice and Ignorance is an overwhelming issue with Alcoholism, it seems everyone from the Police to Judges to Counselors and Therapist all have their own ideas on what Alcoholism is and why it effects some people and not others.  For many, their own interest drive their Prejudice, some employers think Alcoholics are a waste of time and would rather fire them then offer them the help they need, some people think alcoholics are just the bum on the street corner with nothing helpful to offer society and so they treat them as such. Even many Doctors feel the alcoholic is someone who just needs to change their behavior and clean up their act, they look at the fact that they (the Doctors) can not fix the alcoholism so there is nothing medically wrong, it is just the alcoholics own lack of moral judgment and his lack of motivation to change his life.

The Battle against the prejudices of ignorance and interest will eventually be won, the facts themselves will tip the scales, but it will not happen overnight. It may take years for society to slough off the myths and misconceptions concerning Alcoholism that have governed thought for centuries. Every recovered Alcoholic adds fuel to the fire of this movement forward. Employers that offer the alcoholic the choice of treatment instead of automatically firing them, Doctors who are trained and educated in the early diagnosis and treatment, family members who witness the recovery process and lawyers, policemen, judges, and social workers who come in contact with recovered alcoholics. This and effective treatment programs replacing ineffective ones all together help advance the new understanding of alcoholism.

The battle with alcoholism will never be easy but the more it is understood and realized that long term sobriety is being enjoyed by more and more alcoholics this movement will gain momentum and never be stopped.
