Rapid Detox

Ultra Rapid Detox, or Rapid Drug Detox, is a somewhat newer alternative for drug rehab that involves putting a patient who is addicted to opiates, prescription painkillers or other habit-forming drugs under a general anesthesia in a hospital. This is done with anesthesiologists and nurses who are trained to perform this type of procedure.

Once under the general anesthesia, the patient is given a drug that counteracts the drug to which he or she is addicted. While the person is in this drug-induced coma, he or she can avoid experiencing the various physically painful and uncomfortable aspects of detox, such as shaking, sweating and delirium tremors. The body goes through some of this process while the person is still in a drug induced coma. When the person is taken out of the Drug induced coma it is not the end of all withdraw symptoms, the addict is still going to be very uncomfortable and still experience many of the same symptoms of withdraw as he would have without going through the drug induced coma.

Though the owners of these clinics make rapid detox an attractive alternative to traditional methods, it must be noted that therapy and other related aids to recovery are also needed. Lifestyle changes will need to be made and a patient must take responsibility for his recovery and understand his disease so that he can successfully manage his now sober life. Psychological triggers have to be addressed and healthy coping skills adopted.

A recovering addict must learn a new routine; otherwise he may slip back into old patterns that lead to his drug use and addiction. Daily habits may need to be restructured so that reminders of his past drug use do not bombard him.

With a sudden change, such as occurs from Rapid Detox, it may be harder for the patient to avoid returning to drugs than if he was weaned gradually. Such a quick and painless detox could be compared to an antidote. It can be argued that this kind of detox is not as effective as one in which the addict has to endure the physical withdrawal. Some think it is necessary to work through it and learn that if he or she goes back to the destructive behavior again, those are the consequences that will be suffered the next time.

Finally, as promising as this may be, it is not considered to be a mainstream form of treatment for addictions. There are many others available which are successful and much easier for a person to gain access. Also, there is always a risk to the patient who is put under a general anesthesia. In many circles of addiction treatment, the term “process addiction” is used to create a category of addictions which is different from substance addictions. Process addiction is an addiction to an activity or process, such as eating, spending money, gambling, or sexual activity.

People sometimes have difficulty understanding process addictions, because they believe that people should just be able to stop negative behavior, but people with process addictions face the same problems that people with substance addictions do. You can think of a process addiction as compulsive behavior which is related to a process, while substance addiction requires the ingestion of a particular substance.

The process of addiction is extremely complex, and it appears to be influenced by a variety of factors. GHB – Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid

The human body naturally produces GHB in the central nervous system. It was first produce synthetically in 1874 by “Alexander Zaytsey” and it was not researched for human usage until the 1960s by Dr. Henri Labonti. In the early years it was widely used a crossed Europe as a sleeping agent and at child birth. As time went on the medical community began to realize abuse and dependency on the drug and more regulations were put in place.

GHB has several different street names; “ Liquid Ecstasy”, “Liquid X”, “Liquid G”. When a small amount of GHB is consumed the user will feel an overall feeling of euphoria and well being. When taken in larger amounts the following will occur;

Drowsiness

Dizziness

Depressed Breathing

Amnesia

Nausea

Unconsciousness

When used recreationally in most cases the drug will be a white crystalline type of powder, and it will have a salty taste, and will be odorless and colorless. This has made the drug very popular in the clubs, because it is odorless and colorless it has been used as a date rape drug. This occurs when the drug is mixed into their drinks and the person becomes vulnerable and intoxicated from the GHB and the alcohol.

GHB is both physically and psychologically addictive and has very long and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Overdose on GHB is very difficult to treat and has caused death in many cases.

For drug and alcohol addicts hitting bottom is not an option.

In resent years the widely accepted believe that an addict must hit bottom and ask for help on their own has been completely dicredited. For many years this was believed and followed only to find that many addicts never sought help before their addiction turned fatal and the loved ones were left paying for a funeral rather then treatment.

Rather then waiting for such a crisis to occur strategies have been developed to deliberately create a crisis and to use it to coerce the addict into treatment. In preparing for this event you must learn many things about addiction and how to handle the addict. With the addicts behavior it is easy for the family to become angry and indifferent toward the addict. Compassion and understanding will make this process more effective. Moral judgment and condesending attitudes will only make the addict defensive and hostile and push them further away from treatment.

Compassion and understanding are not words the family of an addict would choose when trying to deal with the addict. I understand the frustration and disapointment the family feels but the addict will not go to treatment because his or her family is mad at them. They cannot control their own behavior, the shame and embarrassment of their own actions is what drives them to contiune down the self distructive path they are already on, to deal with someone yelling at them is just another reason in their mind to get high and forget reality if only for a little while.
