Over the past 20 years my parents have been put through many test and trials, the biggest, one of their sons being an alcoholic drug addict. They had raised their two boys in a very structured Christian home and had done their best to teach them the right way to live and prosper in Gods will.

I have read a story about a family that had went through a similar struggle with one of their sons. He had left home and the community that he was raised in and would not speak to his parents. Years had past since they had heard from him and all seemed lost and hopeless that he would ever be back in their lives. When they began to loose hope they went out and bought their son a new Bible, they had his name engraved on the front of it and they laid it on the coffee table in their living room. Every time they looked at it they prayed for his safe return, this went on for several more years until one day their son called and asked if he could come home.

They had not stopped believing that God had a plan and they were prepared for when he did bring their son home to them. This is much the way parents with sons or daughters that have a drug or alcohol addiction problem they need to be prepared. Do your home work ahead of time, find the resources needed to give him or her the help they need when God brings them around to the understanding that they need help. You never know what God has planned for their life, sometimes it is hard to see but he may be laying the foundation for something far greater then we can imagine.

I know many drug or alcohol addicted sons or daughters never leave home and are a heavy burden on the family because they are at home. I am not saying to hold onto them and try to fix them yourself, you are not qualified for this and giving them things to keep them home is the wrong answer. If you do that then you are just enabling their drug and alcohol addicted life style to continue and in their eyes you are saying it is okay.
